Securing freight inside the van? The dry van load securement guide explains E-track, straps and load placement, and our dry van straps are listed separately.

Securing Freight Inside a Van

The walls and doors of a van contain the freight, but a partial load or a gap between pallets can still shift, and freight that leans on the doors can fall out when they open. Federal cargo securement rules (49 CFR 393.100 to 393.114) apply to vans as well as open decks: cargo has to be contained, immobilized or secured. Run E-Track straps across the load behind the last row, and fill large gaps before you close the doors. For more on the straps themselves, see what dry van belts are.

Winter Chain Laws for Van Drivers

Van drivers run the same mountain passes as flatbedders. Colorado requires commercial vehicles on the I-70 corridor to carry chains from September 1 to May 31, and other western states post chain controls during storms. Carry a set of tire chains sized for your drive tires, and check how to choose and fit tire chains before the season starts.

Dry Van and Reefer Trailer Accessories FAQ

What accessories does a dry van driver need?

E-Track ratchet straps to hold partial loads, tire chains for chain law states, and the safety gear many shippers and receivers require at the dock: a high visibility vest, safety glasses, gloves and sometimes a hard hat. Many company and owner-operator trucks also run a deer guard.

What is the working load limit of an E-Track ratchet strap?

Our E-Track ratchet strap is rated 1,467 lb WLL. It clips into E-track rails on the van walls and ratchets tight across the freight.

Do reefer trailers use the same equipment?

Yes, for straps and truck gear. Many reefers have E-track rails or logistic posts along the walls. Check which rail your trailer has before buying straps, because E-Track straps fit E-track rails only.

Do I need tire chains on a dry van?

Chain laws apply to the truck, whatever trailer it pulls. Colorado requires commercial vehicles on the I-70 mountain corridor to carry chains from September 1 to May 31, and California posts chain controls on mountain passes. See winter chain laws by state.

Which deer guards fit my truck?

Our deer guards and brackets fit Freightliner Cascadia and Volvo VNL trucks. Each product name lists the model years it fits.
