CDL or Non-CDL: Which Kit Do You Need?
A Class A CDL is required when the gross combination weight rating of your truck and trailer is 26,001 lb or more and the trailer is rated over 10,000 lb. Non-CDL hotshot drivers keep the combination at or under 26,000 lb, haul lighter loads and need fewer tie-downs. If you run heavier equipment or plan to move up, start with the CDL quantities.
What Each Item Does
- Winch straps tension over the load from your sliding winches.
- Sliding winches ride the trailer rail so you can put a strap exactly where the load needs it.
- Combination winch bar turns the winches to tighten and release the straps.
- Corner protectors keep straps off sharp edges. FMCSA 393.104(b) requires edge protection where a tie-down could be cut or worn.
- Grade 70 chain and ratchet binders secure equipment and steel. The assembly is rated 4,700 lb, the lower of the chain and binder ratings.
How Many Tie-Downs Does a Hotshot Load Need?
Two FMCSA checks apply at once. Your tie-downs must add up to at least 50 percent of the cargo weight in working load limit, and you need two tie-downs for the first 10 feet of cargo plus one more for each additional 10 feet or part of it. A 12,000 lb load that is 24 ft long needs at least 6,000 lb of working load limit and at least four tie-downs. Read the full rules in our FMCSA cargo securement guide.
Tarps and the Rest of Your Hotshot Setup
Tarps are sized to the load, so they are not part of the kit. Most hotshot drivers choose lightweight tarps.
