Heavy duty ratchet straps are self-contained tie-downs: the ratchet builds and holds tension anywhere on the trailer, with no winch track needed. This page lists every ratchet tie down strap Truck Trailer Pro stocks in 2″, 3″ and 4″ widths, with flat hook, double J hook, chain & clevis and E-track ends. The Working Load Limits (WLL) below are the ratings printed on our own products, so you can match strap count to cargo weight before you order.
Every strap uses polyester webbing, which stretches less than nylon, so tension holds as the load settles on the road.
| Strap | Width × Length | End Fitting | WLL | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 Inch Ratchet Straps | 4″ × 30′, 4″ × 40′ | Flat hook · chain & clevis (40′) | 5,400 lb | Flatbed, step deck, double drop, conestoga |

Two federal rules set the minimum, and a load has to pass both:
So the same 20,000 lb load, if it is a single 20 ft article not blocked at the front, needs at least three tie-downs even though two straps already cover the WLL. The FMCSA cargo securement guide walks through the full rule set, and what WLL means explains how the rating is set.
A winch strap is tensioned by a winch mounted on the trailer, so it is quick to throw across a flatbed with a winch track. A ratchet strap carries its own tensioner, so it works on any trailer, at any anchor point, and as extra tie-downs on top of your winches. Most flatbed drivers carry both. The flatbed starter kit shows a typical mix.
Check the webbing, stitching, hooks and WLL tag before each trip. Take a strap out of service if the webbing is cut, burned, knotted or badly worn, if the stitching is damaged, if a hook is bent or cracked, or if the tag is missing or unreadable. The strap inspection checklist covers each point, and replacement ratchet parts are available separately.
Our 4″ ratchet straps, in flat hook and chain & clevis versions, are rated at 5,400 lb WLL each. The rating is printed on the strap tag. Never load a strap past it, and add straps until the combined WLL is at least half the cargo weight.
Use the stricter of two federal rules: the combined WLL must be at least half the cargo weight (49 CFR 393.106), and the count must match the load length (49 CFR 393.110), which is two tie-downs for the first 10 ft plus one for every additional 10 ft. A 20 ft, 20,000 lb article that is not blocked at the front needs at least three straps.
Pick the end that seats on your anchor point. Flat hooks go under a flatbed or step deck rub rail. Double J hooks fit narrower rails and anchor points. Chain & clevis ends wrap around D-rings, stake pockets and equipment tie-down points, which is why RGN and lowboy drivers use them. E-track fittings lock into van wall rails.
A winch strap is tensioned by a winch mounted on the trailer. A ratchet strap carries its own tensioner, so it works on any trailer and at any anchor point. Our standard 4″ winch straps and 4″ ratchet straps are both rated at 5,400 lb WLL.
Under 49 CFR 393.108, synthetic webbing without a WLL marking is counted at a default value by width: 2,000 lb for 2″, 3,000 lb for 3″ and 4,000 lb for 4″ webbing. That is lower than our marked ratings, so a missing tag can leave a load short at inspection. Replace straps with missing or unreadable tags.
Yes, with chain & clevis ends on rated anchor points. Equipment weighing 10,000 lb or more must be restrained with at least four tie-downs (49 CFR 393.130), and many drivers use Grade 70 chain and binders for it. See the machinery securement guide and the chain and binder kit.
