Frequently Asked Questions About Tarp Repair Kits

Which kit, which material, and what the HH-66 cement actually does — answered from what is in the box.

  • Which tarp repair kit should I choose?
If you run vinyl tarps and want a first kit on the truck, the Beginner Kit (Vinyl) covers a tear with 18 x 60 inches of rip stop vinyl and a quarter gallon of HH-66. If you run both vinyl and parachute tarps, the Advance Kit gives you both materials for a small step up. The Deluxe Kit is the fleet answer: both materials, a full gallon of cement and a pint of thinner, so you are not reordering after two repairs.
  • What is the difference between vinyl and parachute repair material?
They match two different tarp constructions. Vinyl rip stop is for vinyl coated and vinyl laminated tarps, which is what most heavy-duty steel, lumber and machinery tarps are. Parachute rip stop is for the lighter parachute-style fabric used on lightweight tarps. Patch with the material that matches the tarp you are fixing, or the bond will not hold.
  • What is HH-66 and do I need it?
HH-66 is the vinyl cement that actually makes the repair. It is a fast drying, waterproof, solvent-synthetic resin adhesive used to bond vinyl coated and vinyl laminated fabrics to themselves or to other surfaces. The patch material without cement is just fabric, so every repair needs it. It comes in the kits and is also sold on its own in several sizes.
  • Do I need the HH-66 thinner as well?
Not for the repair itself, but it earns its place if you repair often. The thinner is blended specifically for HH-66 and is used to clean brushes, rollers, spray guns and other applicators. It also reactivates dried vinyl cement and removes it from surfaces where you did not want it. It ships with the Deluxe Kit and is sold separately in a 16 oz pint.
  • How much patch material comes in a kit?
Every kit includes 18 inches by 60 inches of rip stop material. On the Advance and Deluxe kits you get that in both vinyl and parachute, so it is 18 x 60 of each rather than 18 x 60 split between them.
  • Can I repair a tarp on the road?
Yes, and that is the point of carrying a kit. HH-66 is fast drying, so a clean tear can be patched at a stop rather than waiting for a replacement tarp. Work on a dry, clean surface and let the bond set before you re-tension the tarp over the load.
  • Is the repair waterproof?
HH-66 is a waterproof adhesive, so a properly applied patch seals the tear rather than just covering it. That matters on a load tarp, where a repair that lets water through is no repair at all.
  • Can I buy just the patch material or just the cement?
Yes. Tarp Repair Materials is sold on its own in vinyl or parachute if you already have cement, and HH-66 cement is sold separately in several sizes if you have run out but still have material. The kits simply bundle the two at a better starting point.
