Built Around the Standard Flatbed Loadout

New flatbed owner-operators commonly start with around ten chains, ten binders and ten straps, plus edge protection. That is the core of this kit. Winches are usually already mounted on the trailer, and tarps depend on your freight, so both are chosen separately.

How Many Tie-Downs Does a Flatbed Load Need?

Two for the first 10 feet of cargo and one more for each additional 10 feet or part of it: a 48 ft load needs at least six. The combined working load limit must also reach 50 percent of the cargo weight, and machinery of 10,000 lb or more needs at least four tie-downs. See our FMCSA cargo securement guide.

Add Tarps and More

Choose your flatbed tarps by drop and freight type, and browse all flatbed trailer equipment. Running a pickup and gooseneck instead? See the hotshot starter kit. Need only chain and binders? See the chain and binder kit.

Frequently Asked Questions About Flatbed Starter Kits

  • What is in the flatbed starter kit?
Ten 4 inch x 30 ft winch straps with flat hooks, ten 5/16 inch x 20 ft Grade 70 chains, ten 5/16–3/8 inch ratchet binders, a combination winch bar, twenty-four plastic corner protectors for straps and ten steel corner protectors with a chain slot. 65 pieces in total.
  • Why are winches not in the flatbed starter kit?
Most flatbed trailers already have winches mounted along the rail, so the kit covers the straps, chain and binders that work with them. Extra sliding winches are sold separately.
  • Are the items priced differently as a kit?
No. Every item is sold at its regular price. Add each one to your cart in the quantity listed.
  • How many tie-downs does a 48 ft flatbed load need?
At least two for the first 10 feet plus one for each additional 10 feet or part of it, so a 48 ft load needs at least six. The combined working load limit must also reach 50 percent of the cargo weight.
  • Does the flatbed starter kit include tarps?
No. Tarps are chosen by drop and load type, so they are sold separately. Most drivers start with a lumber or steel tarp matched to their usual freight.
