How Many Chain and Binder Sets Do You Need?

Your chains must add up to at least 50 percent of the cargo weight in working load limit. A chain that goes over the load and attaches to both sides of the trailer counts its full 4,700 lb; a chain attached directly from the load to the trailer counts half, 2,350 lb. A 20,000 lb machine secured with direct tie-downs therefore needs at least five sets, and any machine of 10,000 lb or more needs at least four tie-downs. See our FMCSA cargo securement guide.

Heavier Chain and Full Rig Setups

Hauling heavier equipment on 3/8″ or 1/2″ chain? Use the pairing table on our chains and binders page, or browse all load binders. Setting up a whole rig? See the flatbed starter kit or the hotshot starter kit.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chain and Binder Kits

  • What is in a chain and binder kit?
One 5/16 inch x 20 ft Grade 70 transport chain with clevis grab hooks and one 5/16–3/8 inch binder per tie-down. Choose the Pro Ratchet Binder or the Indirect Load Chain Binder, both rated 5,400 lb.
  • What is the working load limit of a chain and binder set?
The chain is rated 4,700 lb and the binder 5,400 lb. An assembly is only as strong as its weakest part, so each set counts as 4,700 lb.
  • How many chain and binder sets do I need?
Your tie-downs must add up to at least 50 percent of the cargo weight. Chains that go over the load and attach to both sides of the trailer count their full rating; chains attached directly from the load to the trailer count half. Machinery of 10,000 lb or more needs at least four tie-downs.
  • Are the chain and binder priced differently as a kit?
No. Both are sold at their regular prices. Add one chain and one binder to your cart for each tie-down you need.
  • Do you have kits for 3/8 or 1/2 inch chain?
This kit is built on 5/16 inch chain. For 3/8 or 1/2 inch chain, use the chain to binder pairing table on our chains and binders page to choose the right binder.
