RGN and lowboy trailer equipment for heavy haul. Grade 70 chain in 3/8″ and 1/2″, high-capacity binders, chain and clevis straps, corner protectors, oversize load banners and flags, chosen for machinery and oversize freight on removable gooseneck and fixed-neck lowboy trailers.

RGN vs Lowboy Trailers

An RGN detaches its gooseneck so the deck front becomes a ramp, which is why it is the trailer of choice for equipment that can be driven on. A fixed-neck lowboy is loaded over the rear or by crane. Both carry freight in a well deck about 18 to 24 in off the ground, so equipment up to about 11.5 ft tall stays under a 13 ft 6 in height limit.

Heavy Haul Chain and Binder Pairing

A tie-down is rated at its weakest part (49 CFR 393.108), so pair chain and binder by size. Ratings below are for the products on this site.

Grade 70 chainChain WLLBinderBinder WLL
5/16″4,700 lb5/16″–3/8″ ratchet binder5,400 lb
3/8″6,600 lb3/8″–1/2″ ratchet binder9,200 lb
1/2″11,300 lb3/8″–1/2″ ratchet binder9,200 lb (limits the tie-down)

Add Grade 70 chain hooks and chain connectors for repairs on the road, and steel corner protectors where chain crosses a sharp edge. The Grade 70 vs Grade 80 vs Grade 100 guide explains why Grade 70 is the standard transport chain.

How to Chain Down Machinery

Equipment of 10,000 lb or more needs at least four tie-downs, placed as close as practical to the front and rear (49 CFR 393.130). The combined WLL must be at least half the machine weight, and chains that run from the trailer direct to the machine count at half their WLL (49 CFR 393.106). For a 30,000 lb excavator that means 15,000 lb of counted WLL: five 3/8″ chains with 3/8″–1/2″ binders give 5 x 3,300 = 16,500 lb. Lower buckets, blades and booms to the deck and secure them, and lock articulated machines. Step by step instructions are in the machinery securement guide.

Oversize Load Signs and Flags

Loads wider than 8 ft 6 in, or over a state height or weight limit, need a permit from every state on the route. Most states call for an OVERSIZE LOAD banner on the front and rear and red or orange flags at the widest points. Our oversize load banners come in 18″ x 84″ and 14″ x 72″, and our mesh flags are 18″ square. The oversize load kit groups them on one page.

RGN and Lowboy Trailer Equipment FAQ

What is the difference between an RGN and a lowboy?

Both have a low well deck for tall, heavy equipment. On an RGN (removable gooseneck) the gooseneck detaches and the front of the trailer drops to the ground as a ramp, so equipment can be driven on. A fixed-neck lowboy is loaded over the rear or by crane. The securement gear is the same for both.

What chain do I need for heavy haul?

Most heavy haul loads are secured with 3/8″ or 1/2″ Grade 70 transport chain. Our 3/8″ chain is rated 6,600 lb WLL and our 1/2″ chain 11,300 lb WLL. Pair both with a 3/8″–1/2″ binder rated 9,200 lb, and remember a tie-down is only as strong as its weakest part.

How many tie-downs does an excavator need?

At least four for any machine of 10,000 lb or more (49 CFR 393.130), and the combined WLL must reach half the machine weight (49 CFR 393.106). Chains that run from the trailer direct to the machine count at half their WLL, so a 30,000 lb machine on 3/8″ chain with 3/8″–1/2″ binders needs five chains.

Do RGN loads need oversize signs?

Only when the load is oversize. A load wider than 8 ft 6 in, or over the state height or weight limit, needs a state permit, and the permit sets the signs, flags and escort rules. See the oversize load permits guide.

What are RGN straps?

RGN straps are winch or ratchet straps with a length of chain and a clevis hook on the end. The chain end hooks into stake pockets and D-rings on a lowboy deck where a flat hook will not fit.
