How Coil Racks Are Used
Coil racks, also called coil chocks, coil bunks, coil supports or coil logs, work together with hardwood timbers to cradle a metal coil so it cannot roll. Federal cargo securement rules for metal coils (49 CFR 393.120) require coils to be secured against rolling as well as tied down, and the rack-and-timber cradle is how flatbed drivers handle the rolling part. The rack is also suited to storing coils safely off the ground.

- Beveled lumber: 4 × 4 Northeast hardwood timbers in 4, 6 and 8 ft lengths, with an inclined face for steel coils.
- 30 × 42 coil mat friction pad: rubber mat with a minimum 1.2 coefficient of friction to reduce load shift.
- 6 × 48 heavy duty rubber coil pad: protects steel and aluminum coils from damage.
- Heavy duty metal coil protector: sold as a pair, protects both the coil and your Grade 70 chain.
- Grade 70 transport chain and load binders for the tie-downs, and coil tarps to keep the coil dry.
